My Students

Our school has a unique program called MicroSociety(R) where our students apply for jobs after attending our fall job fair and are then hired into their positions. Student managers help to run the businesses that all students are a part of. We learn skills that translate to our lives in the real world - cost of production, profit/loss, managing finances, etc.

My MicroSociety class is a group of 22 third, fourth and fifth graders.

Our business is the yearbook and we are learning about photography and design as well as learning skills we will apply to our lives in the real world. Our business is in charge of producing the yearbook that will be sold to all students and families as a remembrance of the school year. To learn how to apply the things we are learning about photography and to be able to take photos to include in our yearbook, we need cameras! We are asking for 6 digital cameras that can be shared in groups to practice our photography skills and to take pictures that will be included in the yearbook.

My Project

Without having actual cameras in hand, it is very difficult to learn about and practice the skills of photography and design that my students are learning. We need cameras to put these skills into action. They are learning about rule of thirds, composition and framing and more! The pictures taken during our practicing will be used to make products such as greeting cards and for photos we sell in our photo booth to our customers in our monthly MarketPlaces (using our school currency that employees earn by working in their businesses - 3 hours/school week).

We also need those cameras to take the pictures (using our newly acquired photography skills!) that will be included in our school's yearbook.
