Snapshots of Hands-On Learning

My students need digital cameras in order for them to easily track and document learning completed at interactive learning stations.

My Students

Students learn best from hands-on activities. However, often these activities cannot be documented on paper. I want my students to have the opportunity to take quick snapshots of their work so that they can remember and celebrate their learning to help encourage future learning!

My kindergarten class has 22 students.

The students are from diverse backgrounds, have diverse learning styles, and have varying academic levels. We are an inclusion classroom and have multiple students with special needs. Our Title One school is located near a military base, and we have many students who are in military families. My students learn best when they are able to actively engage in learning. Many of them are not able to sit and listen to a teacher talk for long periods of time. Worksheets do not keep their attention and they need to be able to move freely. They need a variety of learning choices and levels which cannot be provided from worksheets that are easy to file away.

My Project

My students will use the digital cameras to take quick snapshots of work completed during learning activities. They will be able to document their progress quickly and see how their learning has grown over time through pictures. I will be able to look at the pictures and assess how well students are completing learning tasks. Being able to see the tasks on camera will save valuable classroom time because I will not have to tell them to wait for me to look at it before cleaning up and beginning a new activity. I will be able to easily review work each day and make decisions about what to teach, reteach, and review by looking at their work when I am not also rushed to get through the day. Students will be able to show their families what we are learning through their pictures and we will be able to save their pictures to slideshows saving space in the classroom without using up valuable paper resources. The ability to take pictures saves work will also motivate students to do their best.

This project will improve my students' learning in several ways.

Students will be able to see learning over time in the placement of slide shows and therefore increase confidence in themselves. Students will be able to look back over work and set goals on how to improve learning and then track those goals. It will help save time and allow me to make more hands-on learning activities to increase engagement since we have a better way of documenting these activities.
