I am lucky to work with an incredible group of 24 energetic kindergarteners! Our class is made up of a diverse blend of students from different backgrounds. The student body of the school is about 50% African American and 50% Latino. It is a Title I school with over 90% of the students qualifying for free or reduced price lunch.
Many of my kindergarteners have never been in school before, or in any structured setting.
Unfortunately, they are already at a disadvantage compared to students from more affluent neighboring schools. However, I couldn't have asked for a more amazing group of children. They're curious, engaged, and silly. I want to give them the tools to be successful in life, and I need your help to do it! Please consider going on this journey with us!
My Project
Learning sight words is an integral step to becoming readers and writers! The beginning books that my students are reading are filled with words such as you, here, the, and find that they don't yet know how to decode. These are the words they just "need to know." My students have a huge goal to learn 100 sight words before they go to first grade!
I want to teach my kindergartners to read and write sight words in fun, engaging ways!
I am requesting a full set of snap words. These cards teach every sight word with a picture and a motion. The pictures and movement helps them to remember the sight words much more efficiently -- and have a lot more fun!
I am also requesting hands on materials, including wikki stix, magnetic letters, and colored glue so that my students can practice their sight words in multisensory ways!
