Over and over again, we hear that language development requires an authentic environment with plenty of social interaction with peers and language-users. Yet, I find, that the curriculum I am prescribed to use does not address adequately the English language needs of my kindergarten students with disabilities. I teach 10-15 students most of whom are English Language learners with various mild to moderately severe disabilities. My school is located in a low-income neighborhood, and 99% of my students' family members have not attended college, and have very little knowledge of issues in special education. As a teacher, and my students' advocate, I want for them to be able to participate in the mainstream schooling process as much as possible. One of our big goals has been to be able to communicate effectively with peers, gain confidence, and be able to write sentences so that kindergarteners in the Special Day class can eventually exit out of special education into general education and be equally successful. One tool which will promote language development through pretend and play, enhance oral and written communication skills, while at the same time piquing student interest would be the opportunity for students to write to one another on a regular basis. It is for this purpose that I am seeking to obtain a classroom mailbox, a classroom post office and letter-writing supplies. I plan to use these tools on a daily basis. Students will have time at the beginning or end of the day to write/journal their thoughts to their peers or to me using the letter-writing kit, and mail their letters in the mailbox. This way, students will be introduced to an important aspect of civic life, to newer vocabulary words, and will also have a concrete understanding of writing for a purpose, for a given audience, and will be thus introduced to the importance of legibility in penmanship and clarity in thought. The mailbox will also be a great tool of student-need differentiation since many of my students have trouble recognizing names of their peers and letters of the alphabet. Sorting mail, a task that is derivative of the mailbox and post office, can be a responsibility involving classroom job while simultaneously giving students practice with peer-names and letter names. The mailbox and post office will also be used by another set of 15 kindergarten students with special needs who I share the classroom with in the morning. These students are also primarily ELL. All in all, the writing supplies, classroom mailbox and post office will be exciting educational tools which will motivate the students to write for a purpose, and use language meaningfully!
