Each day in my classroom is a new adventure. I have the privilege of working with an amazing group of students, ages seven to twelve, with a varying range of special needs. My students face challenges in the areas of cognition, speech, motor, visual, hearing, social and/or behavioral skills. Many are also directly impacted by attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, autism or sensory processing disorders. This influences how they interpret and interact with the world around them. Their unique viewpoint has changed who I am as both a teacher and a parent.
My students challenge me to provide them with access to meaningful experiences and curriculum that will allow them to grow as future world citizens.
My students inspire and guide my classroom teams as we work together to learn academic, social and life skills.
My Project
My classroom family comes to me each day from very diverse home lives and socio-economic backgrounds. In order for them to learn and thrive, I must first ensure that their basic needs are met. When a student arrives to school hungry, it impossible to expect them to focus on anything else.
The provision of daily packaged snacks and weekly snack cooking activities will keep my student’s busy bellies full, their minds focused on learning, and their motivation to engage in lessons high.
A classroom snack pantry with ready-to-go items such as peanut butter crackers, pretzels, popcorn, applesauce, yogurt, granola bars, fruit snacks, animal crackers, pudding cups, chips, and rice crispy treats would benefit my students but providing quick, easily accessible, and kid friendly food. The requested muffin and cookie mixes would be incorporated into our weekly class cooking activities. During our cooking lessons, each student contributes to the measuring, pouring, or mixing of ingredients. Snacking on a warm, freshly made cookie or muffin is a wonderful way to celebrate Fun Friday.
