I am a special education resource room teacher at a middle school. I teach students with disabilities such as: students with learning disabilities, students with autism, students visual impairments and students with hearing impairments.
Students, with or without disabilities, show up everyday to learn.
All students have different needs and learn through different modes. Most of my kids require extrinsic motivation to learn and to maintain their behavior. Skills are taught through lessons embedded within academic lessons. My students number one item they want for rewards are snacks..
My Project
Much of my classes are centered around behavior modification. I use a program called Class Dojo, where students earn points for appropriate behavior learned through different lessons planned around social and emotional skills. Examples of ways students earn points are: being seated and ready to learn, cleaning up their area, completing work, raising their hand versus blurting out, taking turns, collaborating with peers in group projects and participating in discussions, to name a few. These skills are aligned to the student's social and emotional goals written within their individualized educational plan.
Through this method of reward and consequence, students learn what is appropriate behavior to have with teachers and peers.
Their number 1 request is snacks. Please help these students get the snacks that they deserve for improving their behavior.
