Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are enthusiastic and eager to learn. They live in the neighborhood of South Bronx where the median household income is $27,000. Many of my students work part-time after work to support themselves and their families. My school offers early college opportunities for students to take advantage of college course as soon as they are in their sophomore year in high school. As a result, some of my students have the opportunity to receive an associate degree even in addition to their high school diploma.

My students benefit from having resources and equitable access to academic information in order for them to be equipped to compete with their age-level peers in wealthier districts.

My school also provides my students with socio-emotional support through Single Shepherd and Margaret's Place to support their needs and cope with the demands of school work and outside the school. My school believes in the approach of meeting students’ needs as a whole - academically, socially, and emotionally, in order for them to be successful.

My Project

Poor nutrition is proven to exacerbate stress, fatigue, and inattentiveness. My students are actively involved in sports such as track, softball, and basketball in addition to their schoolwork. As a result, their brains will need more fuel to accommodate both academic and physical activities. This project will provide my students with accessible and appetizing snacks to ensure an inviting learning environment after school.

My students especially those who stay after school will benefit from having snacks available during tutoring.

They often display lethargy after their school day because they did not want to eat lunch or did not have time to eat due to making up work with a teacher. These snacks will boost their energy and mood to stay after school so that they can receive additional academic support.
