Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I want my students to make healthy choices for snacks. I want them to look at labels and make decisions about what to eat so that the items they are eating are better choices.

This collection of snacks includes popcorn and goldfish crackers that have nutrition labels and my students will be able to make comparison between these snacks and other snack items that are fried in oil.

Gardetos Snacks Mix, Miss Vickies Cooked Potato Chips, Bueno Bars, Beef Jerky are snack items to consider. Bobo Granola Bars are snack options too, but read the sugar content, fats and sodium content too! Understanding and comparing food labels is a good skill.

We want a collection of snacks that are healthier options. I am teaching students to pick items that have 8 grams of sugar or less when they want something sweet. I want us to compare the labels and find items that have fiber, less fats, less sodium and less sugars. I want them to figure out if eating a bag of popcorn is a better choice than eating a bag of fried chips. I also want them to look at the sodium content. I want my students to look and see how many saturated fats are in the snacks they eat.

I always encourage my student to eat balanced meals. I talk up the importance of eating lean meats, grains, fresh vegetables and ripe fruit. We talk about appropriate food portions. I realize that my students are consumers and they shop at convenience stores and grocery stores. When they want to buy a bag a chip, they have choices. Having learned about healthier choices, and having eaten the healthier snacks, they will hopefully make better decisions and pick snack foods that give them energy and are good for them.
