I teach 2nd grade in a small, rural school in South Carolina. Many of my students come from single parent, low-income homes and face many challenges both inside and outside the classroom. Our school receives free lunch and many receive food bags to take home on the weekends. Though I can not do much to change their home environments, I can certainly work to make their school environment the best that it can be!
Despite many hardships and difficulties, all of the second grade students come into our classrooms every day full of life, smiles and ready to learn!
They are ready for what the day may bring and they are so excited about learning. Second grade is such perfect age! They're still young enough to capture their hearts and help them to develop a love of learning that will grow and create life-long learners, yet old enough to better understand what is going on around them.
My students have a variety of needs! First of all, many of them need me to help them fill in the gap when it comes to food when they are not in school. This project will supply me with plenty of snack items to send home with them on the weekends. This will give them a little something to eat, if they do not have enough, while away from the school provided breakfast and lunch. Also, we need a few good sets of headphones to use in the classroom. With 20 students, it is impossible for them to work on their computers throughout the day if they do not have reliable headsets. Also, they may have to use these at home if we are to ever have to go back to virtual learning. Both items requested are very important and needed.
