Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I teach algebra to approximately 200 high school students, most of which aspire to go into the field of engineering or healthcare. They are facing many challenges from academics, to attendance, to behavior, and home insecurity in some cases. My goal is to make their 9th grade year a good one, in spite of any barriers they may be facing.

I love it when my students get excited about learning and I like to motivate them to continue learning and meeting their goals.

The best and most popular rewards for high school students are snacks! The snacks from this project will serve to incentivize students to reach specific goals and reward them for progress they make.

One of our school goals this year is to raise the percentage of 9th grade students to pass algebra, so if snacks is what motivates them, then snacks it is! Aside from using these snacks as incentives and prizes, many students truly do need snacks or drinks because of the financial burden their families may be facing. We have also been experiencing a heat wave these past few weeks so if I can have some drinks to make them feel better, that would be helpful. Ultimately, my goal is for students to feel a sense of accomplishment with each learning goal that is achieved as well as to know that I am here to support them with other needs as well. Thank you for being on our team.
