My Project

My students enjoy Drop Everything And Read (DEAR) time every day. It's most of my kids' favorite time of the day. We turn off half of the overhead lights and have lamps and stringed lights around the room. We play a relaxing nature CD. The students carry their book bins filled with library books and books they've been practicing with me to find a comfy spot around the room. They retrieve a pillow, sit spot or cushion to sit upon or choose the rocking chair, carpet or bench to get cozy on while they read.

The BEST part of DEAR is choosing which snack to enjoy while reading.

Our classroom chef displays a variety of snacks on the table, and students can choose which snack they want to eat. At the same time, they slip away to Jack and Annie's adventure in a Magic Tree House book, laugh at Junie B. Jone's misguidance, escape to other lands of make-believe, or learn about dinosaurs and other topics of interest.

Some of my students experience food insecurity. Once they leave school, they may not eat again until they return for breakfast the following day. I enjoy providing my students with a snack to eat before they leave for the day to help fill their tummies, just in case.

My students love DEAR time. With your help, I can provide them with snacks for the rest of the year!
