My Project

I work in a school with many students coming from low income home, different family dynamics and diverse backgrounds. All students in the school receive free lunch, and in the past, our school has been able to provide snacks for those students who were unable to provide them for themselves. Unfortunately this year, our district will not be providing students snacks.

Having snacks and personalized water bottles in the classroom allows me to provide something to the these students, so they know that my classroom is more than just a place to learn, but a safe space for to have other needs met as well.

Lunch shifts start as early as 10:25 and go as late as 1:05. students with either very early lunch or very late lunches go stretches during the day between meals. When students are able to get a snack, they are no longer worried about watching the clock for the next meal or misbehaving because of their hungry stomachs. They are able to get a quick snack to refuel their bodies and keep pushing through the academic day.

I often have between 10 to 12 students who come to school daily with no snack and rely on the school provided snacks. Even more of those students come to and have forgotten their water bottle at home, have lost their plastic water bottle in the pile of unclaimed plastic bottles at recess or specials, or are simply unable to have one at all. A healthy snack and access to water during the helps students maintain the energy they need to focus and attention on the learning in the classroom!
