Help me give my students healthy snacks to reward and motivate them. Some days, the positive attention from a teacher can keep a student from giving up on school.

My Students

My students live in a rural tourist vacation area. We have wonderful weather year round and access to the most beautiful ocean waters from the coral islands we live on.

This place is full of wonder, but living here is quite costly.

Many of my students are the children of the hospitality and service industry workers that make their living here. Most of one's salary goes to housing. What is left over gets used up quickly to pay for the expensive groceries, gas, and all other necessities that must be trucked or shipped in.

Most of my students are fun loving outdoorsy types who relish in this marine playground we live in. Some, however, feel trapped by our limited geography and diversity and crave the four seasons and access to big box stores that most of America enjoys.

My Project

Everyone likes to be recognized for their hard work. Using healthy snacks as a reward system helps kids stay motivated and connected to my class. When students do the required work and protocol in my class, their name goes into the weekly drawing for a snack. Once a week, three names will be drawn for a snack reward.

Students love the system and look forward to the weekly drawing.

Some students rush into my room to be "caught" doing the right thing before the bell rings; a particular favorite of mine. Students who put their heads down and don't engage, do not get a ticket into the drawing. Each day is a fresh opportunity to gain a ticket for the week's snack drawing.
