Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is a K-5 Spanish dual-immersion school in Sonoma, California. Our students are native Spanish speakers and native English speakers who together are learning to become fully bilingual and bi-literate individuals. Coming back from Distance Learning we are striving to create the best learning environment for all of our students. Learning a second language is difficult in person and has extra challenges coming back from being online for over a year!

My Project

As we've heard, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. But what about morning snack time? Snacks are good for kids because they help them stay focused at school and on homework, give them needed nutrients, and keep hunger at bay.

As students work through their morning activities, they build up an appetite, and hunger can affect their focus.

In addition to the benefits to their health and focus, snack time is a crucial part of learning routines in first grade. We clean up our tables, make sure our hands are clean, and stand in line. Then the students get to make a choice about which snack they want out of the variety provided. The opportunity for choice helps my students develop a sense of independence, and the routine allows them to practice their sharing skills and taking turns.
