This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I work as a special education teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district. My students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. To combat the many challenges they encounter, I am looking to provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences through reading.
The students range from grades K-5 and all possess various skills, interest, and desires in learning new things.
Your donation will help further cultivate and develop their various skills and love for reading.
My Project
I am a strong believer in Maslow's hierarchy of needs, and providing children with food and snacks such as Cheez It Crackers, General Mills Cereal, and Frito Lays variety packs will allow my students to get a quick snack and continue to work.
Chronic hunger can prevent students from making the most of a formal education, no matter how hard they try to ignore its effects.
The sad truth is that hunger can have physical and psychological effects on young people that make learning substantially difficult.
Food is the fuel necessary to get through a normal day. Calories in food provide energy to carry out regular day-to-day activities. Without an adequate amount of this energy, students may fall asleep in school or lack the energy to pay attention to an entire day of classes.
The brain, like the lungs, heart, arms, and legs, is a part of the human body. It requires energy to function properly. Children experiencing hunger are more likely to have problems with memory and concentration because they do not have the energy to carry out these functions.
My para and I usually purchase these items and store them in the class for our students. We have seen the benefits it has as students are able to independently get a snack and return back to the task at hand.
