Smoother and More Prepared Spring Semester for Chemistry Students

Help me give my students a much smoother spring semester as I am more prepared for in-person learning and obtain the adequate chemicals and technology for them to thrive.

My Students

My students consist of Black, Latinx, and Asian students from East Oakland, CA. At least 85% of them identify as low-income and qualify for free and reduced-cost lunch. Many of them are immigrants and refugees themselves or their parents identify as such from Africa, Latin America, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia.

My Project

This first semester was a very difficult transition to in-person learning. Many teachers were unprepared as well as underfunded. Many of us had to make last minute changes because we were no longer familiar with how to navigate in-person resources. Our teacher reflexes lagged behind for the first time in a long time and we then realized how few resources we had and how much we needed.

The goal of this project is for me to plan ahead and know exactly the labs, and subsequent materials, that are necessary for my Chemistry course.

The students have been great and gone along with all the adjustments I have made but I know they deserve more, even if they are unaware. These materials will provide a more hands on experience that I could not always provide during the Fall semester.
