My students need Smithsonian books to read for pleasure. I have many students, particularly boys who are reluctant readers. These students like nonfiction, illustrated books, and my collection needs updating.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students at my high school come from a wide variety of backgrounds. Over 50% of our students come from low-income families. Many of our students have parents who serve in the military or work at the local military base. We have students who have parents who are seasonal agricultural workers. My goal is to provide a safe, welcoming place for all students. I also want to make sure they have the resources and materials they need to be successful in high school and beyond.
Many students will be the first in their families to attend college, and the library is here to support them in their educational journey.
DonorsChoose is a wonderful partner for schools who are trying to manage shrinking budgets, while still providing materials and books the students need to be successful. My school district is very supportive of the library, but we have many great programs at my school, so I am grateful to DonorsChoose for providing additional materials and books for my students.
My Project
Many students in my school do not like to read, and so I want to provide books these students will be interested in. A novel can be daunting to them and many are just not interested in reading fiction. Smithsonian books are well written and the illustrations are wonderful.
Students do judge a book by its cover, and just looking at the covers on these books makes you want to open them up.
Many of the books in these sections of my library are from the 1980's and 1990's and some even older than that, yet they still get checked out.
A lot of times I will just leave books laying around the library I think the students will enjoy looking at. Usually, these books will get checked out, and then students will come and ask me for other recommendations. I find this a good way to encourage students to read.
