Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is very diverse. We are a school of approximately 1400 students from grades 9-12. Our school is an urban school in the heart of a large city. We have all different students: special needs, foreign speaking students, etc. Our students come from low-income families. The majority of the families live from paycheck to paycheck. We try to provide as much aid as possible to our students with supplies to help them succeed in their education; pens, pencils, notebooks, calculators, snacks, hygiene products, clothes, etc. About 80% of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunches.
Many of our students do not have technical devices in their homes.
My school is a port of entry school for foreign speaking students. 85% of the student body are Hispanic, and many are first generation - come from South America, Central America, Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico.
Our school has a diversity of different cultures that intertwine to come together to produce a safe, happy and culturally filled school setting.
My Project
My PEP club is an intricate part of the school. The student club promotes student involvement and school spirit. My student members are involved in school events, dances, haunted house events, sports events and drama performances. The PEP club makes flyers, posters and other propaganda promoting each event. The student staff also take pictures of the upcoming events, performers or players to compose the flyers advertising the upcoming events. The students are energetic, passionate and dedicated to get the schools and community involved in school events. They are the embodiment of "SCHOOL PRIDE". I am so proud to be a staff member and work with these students and try to get them all they need to be socially, academically and emotionally successful. The student club has been using their cell phones but the pictures come out grainy and unclear when we enlarge them and/ or crop them. "A picture is worth a thousand words'.' A camera would help the students capture quality pictures and record school events in order to promote school spirit and student involvement as well as community involvement.
A camera would promote skills and techniques that will last past school years and they can use in the future.
This would further encourage students' creativity and passion. The camera would allow the students to take pictures of sports events, activities, plays and events - in order to create posters and advertisements to promote upcoming school events, to promote school involvement and to increase school spirit and enhance the students' confidence and express their individuality of the students as they see the quality of their work displayed.
