Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
It's amazing what a little fun and a reward can do to engage learners in fairly routine classroom activities. My 1st through 7th-grade students will push through tough assignments and challenges knowing that they can choose a fun sticker from my sticker wall when they are finished. We also use these rewards to reinforce positive behavior choices and motivate students to do their best on assignments.
Helping students make positive choices with small rewards is the "secret sauce" to keeping kids engaged in their math and reading learning with a minimum of classroom disruptions.
I pay for most of these supplies and rewards out of my own pocket, so all donations are very much appreciated. My go-to reward for students are fun vinyl stickers with a variety of fun characters, topics, and hobbies. Stickers are rewards for good work and encourage students to clean up their area before leaving the classroom.
My students are bright, inquisitive, and love a challenge. Many of my students come from disadvantaged backgrounds. During the day, I teach enrichment groups for gifted students. These groups also serve high-achieving students who are not identified as "gifted" because we try to be as inclusive as possible. In our rural district, most families work in agriculture. Over 80% of our school children are of Hispanic descent and most students participate in the free lunch program.
