A typical day in my room is differentiation at its best! ...Well, at my best! After our morning routine and group literacy lesson are complete, we dive right into small group work where students are grouped by skill level. Groups are always changing based on topics and student success and need.
My students are the happiest little people who want so dearly to be successful and loved!
Our school is located in Philadelphia in an area where most students live in poverty, but due to neighborhood gentrification, we have an ever-changing school population. My class consists of children of varying races and socioeconomic backgrounds. As all children are individuals and learn differently, I find that some children arrive with much more background information and previous knowledge to draw from. Some come from very literature rich homes, where others may not. These are differences that these young children don't understand and rarely recognize and therefore create an amazing learning environment where students gain so much from each other. My students are funny and kind. They are hardworking and curious. They are nearly my every thought from June until the next June when I get a new list of names to worry about!
My Project
I am requesting one blue Rainbow Group Table which will be used for small group instruction. Because the students are of varying ability levels and come from varied backgrounds, it is important that they work in small groups to develop specific skills. This table will make it possible for me to work in small groups with the students while easily modeling and monitoring their work. It is a great place for students to work quietly helping each other as well!
In times where more and more cuts are made to education and classes become larger and larger, it is important to have a place where students can work in small groups and receive more individualized attention!
