Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Meeting this group of wonderfully curious second graders has further inspired me to continue my work as a lifelong learner. My students are always eager to learn, even with varying levels of ability they meet challenge with enthusiasm, determination and persistence. Their growing confidence is a reminder that children are both resilient and capable, with potential to become future leaders of the world.
Unfortunately, my students' motivation to excel academically is met with the reality of the lack of resources needed for optimal academic growth.
Our school is in the center of Paterson, New Jersey, the third most populated city in the state of New Jersey, being home to more than 148,000 residents. This high volume and low-income district is lacking the resources and adequate funding needed to accommodate the vast number of students served in all schools.
My Project
As we prepare for the new school year, I am pushing to incorporate more small group instruction in my classroom. Small group instruction is proven to provide both an individualized and collaborative learning experience for students. The reduced student-teacher ratio allows educators to connect with individual students, reinforce concepts and assess comprehension. Small-group instruction is key to successfully implementing intervention strategies, being able to work closely with students on concepts they may struggle with.
Small-group instruction allows teachers to evaluate students’ learning strengths and tailor lessons to them, this gives us the opportunity to help students succeed with different strategies.
For instance, teachers may break down concepts not easily understood or breeze though lessons that students firmly grasp. Students' confidence also benefits from small-group instruction as some students struggle to participate in front of the entire class. The one-on-one attention they receive from small-group instruction activities can boost the confidence of students who may otherwise have a hard time with communication and/or self expression.
To begin, I am requesting the donation of a teaching table where my students can sit comfortably. The "kidney" table I have requested allows me to work with 3-4 students while sitting in the center to give them my full attention. The seating arrangement is also optimal for group collaboration. I am also requesting a set of teaching clocks, a topic which students would benefit from hands-on learning materials. These clocks will allow students to understand how to read an analog clock, this is something I've seen many students struggle with over time. I have also included additional materials which could aid my understanding and approach to intervention strategies in both mathematics and language arts. With these materials I plan on incorporating small group instruction into our everyday routine. I anticipate greater comprehension in all subjects!
