This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My classroom is a Pre-K classroom consisting of boys and girls that are 4 years old. My students come from economically disadvantaged homes in the inner city of the largest urban school district in the state. The school is over 100 years old! The school is located in a crime-infested area with homes that are in shambles, vacant lots filled with rubbish, and remains of burned out structures. The students, with the help of their parents, somehow rise above it all and come to school daily, eager to learn through play.
A typical day in my classroom is filled with smiles, laughter, and a sense of security.
My students come to school full of energy and ready to learn. They know they are in a safe place with a variety of hands-on activities that keep them on task and out of trouble. There is never a boring moment throughout the day in my classroom!
My Project
Often my pre-k students come to school hungry and tired. The students in my pre-k program are living below the federal poverty guidelines and are given free breakfast, lunch and snack daily at school. I am able to keep their bellies full at school but I cannot keep them warm and comfortable at night in order to get enough rest.
The "tired" part of the equation is because my students are living in over crowded living spaces where families and friends share homes to survive along with sharing beds to sleep.
I know I cannot fix the homelessness of the equation but I would love to see my pre-k babies getting enough sleep at night in their own space. If I could provide them with their own sleeping bag then I know they would be able to keep warm and sleep independently from others crowded in a bed. My students would perform a lot better at school if they were to come to school prepared, which includes enough sleep to function.
Your donation would help my students to rest easy at night in a snug, warm sleeping bag. Your donation would also help my students to succeed in the classroom by being well rested and prepared to learn.
