Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
“I am smart, I am loved and I am strong”, these words are self-affirmations I have my students say every day in my classroom. My students have intellectual disabilities, but they love to learn as all students do. My students are fourth and fifth graders. They are on an alternate curriculum called Unique Learning System. My students learn best when with sensory manipulatives as well as access to adapted items.
My classroom is IDS- Intellectual disability severe, my school is a Title I school and PHBAO school.
Title I schools are schools with a student base where at least 40% come from low-income families.
PHBAO is an acronym for Predominantly Hispanic, Black, Asian, or other Non-Anglo. A school is categorized as PHBAO based on its resident student population.
My students require adapted support to access their curriculum.
I am a newer teacher, this is my fifth year teaching this classroom and I have found that to help my students flourish I need items such as ones listed.
My Project
I purchased simple supplies for my students at the beginning of the year, and since we use them every day, our markers are drying out, and specialized tools such as slant boards and tactile letters are needed to help students learn at home.
I will be sending another care package to my students with simple necessities and some surprises.
Some students need slant boards to help them stay focused; the slant boards will be sent to students' homes that need them. Sensory learning is essential in our class, and some students need personal, tactile letters that will be their's to keep to sustain distance learning.
With the holiday season near, I will also send some fun educational books and toys for the students.
