My Students

For 180 days a year, I get the opportunity to inspire a new batch of wide-eyed, outgoing and curious students that have big dreams of becoming doctors, police officers, veterinarians, teachers, artists, athletes, and musicians--And I consider myself to be extremely lucky to be able to cultivate that love for learning.

The amazing thing about my students is that some of them are the first in their families to attend schools in the United States!

Our neighborhood school is made up of a diverse community featuring many students with different races, abilities, incomes, languages and other home dynamics. Our school is also unique, in that there is a large population of families from Gambia and other West African countries.

Some students live around the school in single-family homes, while most of our students are bused in from apartments. Over 60% of our school receives free and reduced meals, and many of those students also rely on school for books, supplies and even dental care.

My Project

"I want to be an NBA player." -Giannis Antetokounmpo. Giannis and the Milwaukee Bucks' playoff success catapulted basketball to another level at our school. He became our hero and we used his life to inspire us to do great things. All students, old and young, were showing up to school, wearing #34 and carrying basketballs ready to dribble, throw, catch, and pivot their way into becoming a better basketball player. Many of them would say they wished we had a hoop so they could play a "real game."

This basketball hoop will be installed on our front playground to make a half-court for kindergarten-second grade students to play basketball during recess and at after school programs.

In addition to being used during the school day, the basketball hoop and half-court will serve as a space for an after school basketball club. School staff will teach and model for students how to play competitive team sports. Once they are ready, students will begin to compete against one another using the skills they've learned.

Playing basketball teaches students how to be a good teammate and sportsmanship. It allows young children to relieve stress, build endurance, boost confidence, and improve fine motor skills. These skills transfer to other parts of their social-emotional and academically driven days.

With your help, we can provide students a safe and fun place to do what they love for many years to come.
