This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

It is essential for everyone, especially children, to learn to focus on the positive side of their lives at a time when everything around them seems to cause the opposite. With Skype technology, I am starting a project that I hope will unite students, classes and schools from around our planet.

I teach a group of 90 incredibly curious and imaginative students across three different grade levels.

All of these students speak English as a 2nd language. Many of my students come from "broken" homes with a hard working parent putting in extra hours at work, leaving them with very little time to spend with their children. Because of their busy schedules and low incomes these parents are not able to provide their child with many hands on experiences outside of their own homes. Due to limited experiences at home, these kids are struggling significantly with meeting state standards, especially in the area of Language Arts.

My Project

My students are socially inexperienced. Extreme poverty prevents exposure to new places, new people, and life experiences that would give them social tools in dealing with issues like intolerance and bullying. My students are stuck in a bubble and a remarkable tool like Skype, combined with the versatility of a WiFi tablet, would give them a peek into the outside world. My goal is to take my students on a journey using Skype in the Classroom and not only give them access to the landmarks, history, and traditions of a far away land, but also give them access to its people. I plan to connect with other classrooms and discuss diversity, and share ideas that will give everyone an understanding of where they are on the map and how we are all connected in the bigger picture of our world culture and community.

This project bursts open our classroom walls and teaches diversity, acceptance, and respect as students learn to embrace the tapestry of uniqueness and culture that we are all a part of.
