Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 8th graders in an under-resourced school in San Diego. Every student at the school qualifies for the free and/or reduced price lunch program and they come from hard-working families. My students are very diverse and come from many different countries and speak different languages.
They have their struggles but they're good kids and it's so much fun to share my science passion with them.
They're inquisitive and energetic kids. They ask lots of questions and are curious about the world.
My Project
Despite the fact that it's arguably never been easier to get into programming, which is a valuable 21st century skill, it's not all that easy to convince the students to give it a shot.
However, throw in some mini-drones that allow software to teach the basics of coding, the key difference being that kids can actually SEE the effects of their code changes in the drone's actions and suddenly it's a game changer!
Kids love drones and this is a engaging way to hook kids into programming. The students will be able to instantly realize the true power of coding as they program the drones to perform the tasks we create in the classroom like flying through hoops or hitting a particular target.
The power pack add on will allow the drones to fly for a little bit longer while the motor replacement kits will be used to repair any drones that need that extra boost after multiple flights and crashes.
