Skimming the Surface with STEM!

Help me give my students the materials needed to design paper skimmer cars!

My Project

I teach Design and Modeling to 7th Grade students in Great Bend, Kansas. One of the projects that the students love every year is called Paper Skimmers. In this unit the students learn how to measure accurately using the US customary system of measurement (down to 1/16 of an inch!). They then look at a blueprint for a skimmer car complete with measurements and have to create the car using file folders. Once complete they use their design skills to decorate their car with a sponsor of their choice.

This project integrates measurement, fractions, and design giving students hands on opportunities to showcase their skills.

At the end of the project we have a friendly competition to see whose skimmer will launch the furthest. We also have a "best in show" award for students who go above and beyond designing their sponsors decor on their car. The kids absolutely love this project. However, the supplies to pull it off each year are out of my budget. The only way I can continue to implement this project is through generous donors like you!
