I am an art teacher at PS 198 in Brooklyn. I teach grades k-5. I have scheduled a visit to the Metropolitan museum of Art in March for a gifted second grade class. I plan to take the children on a tour of French paintings from Chardin to Manet. It will be the culmination of a unit on the contribution of French artists to the history of painting. Many of them have never visited a museum before. I already have arranged for a free bus and free admission to the museum. I would like to take them out to lunch at McDonald's and buy them sketchbooks and drawing materials for drawing at the museum. I would like to make the day as memorable as possible since it will be their first to a major art museum. I want to instill the importance of sketching at a young age so that they can develop it as a life long skill. I feel that sketching in the museum will be more educational and exciting than a lecture tour. I hope you will consider fulfilling my request for my especially gifted second grade students. I received funding for a proposal "Haystacks in Manhattan" which involved a similar idea but with impressionist paintings. Even though, it was two years ago, the kids are still talking about the trip. I asked them what their favorite part of the trip was (thinking it would be McDonald's lunch) and they all said seeing all the beautiful artwork at the museum. This is what inspired me to request funds.
