My Students
I get to teach art to over 300 students with different motivations, talents, and needs. My students’ ages range from 5 to 11 years old and they come from varying socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. They are all incredibly creative and intuitive. I see art as an opportunity to help them explore the world around them and find their voice.
In our classroom we work to create a community that supports and uplifts everyone, keeping in mind the words of Henri Matisse: that creativity takes courage.
We all work together to create a classroom that is a safe space for their ideas where we can learn new and exciting skills together.
While in the classroom, my students collaborate in their learning, sharing materials and inspiration. Learning from home definitely presents some challenges, especially when it comes to access to materials. By providing the students with the same basic material, each child will be able to have the same advantages while creating.
My Project
Each week during our virtual art class, students will receive a prompt to explore creatively. These small sketchbooks will give them a centralized place to contain all of their work and will help them learn how to sketch their ideas. With art happening at home, it's important that every student has access to the same materials.
It is my hope that my kids will not be limited by their supplies, and can use these sketchbooks as a foundation for further creativity.
With this project funded, every student will be able to brainstorm, build, and create.
