Skeleton in the Closet

My students need an articulated skeleton.

My Students

I teach middle school science at a large Illinois elementary school. My students are from low-income families. As a teacher and lover of science, I want to instill my love for discovery and inquiry in my students.

I recently began to teach my students about human genetics and they really showed an interest in the topic.

We now have scientific conversations regarding mutations and heredity. Because my students have shown such an overwhelming interest in science I would like to continue the momentum gained and introduce them to anatomy. Teaching anatomy theory is great, but adding lab experiences using a fully articulated skeleton will really make this a fabulous and “real” learning opportunity for my students. If my project is funded I will be able to share pertinent information regarding human anatomy and the skeletal system. My students will learn how to identify bones, their exact location within the human body and the way they are connected to each other. Because the extremities of the skeleton are removable, my students will be able to study those bones closer. This project will allow me to teach anatomy for years to come.

My Project

My students need one articulated skeleton. If my project is funded, my students will also get a jump-start on high school and college anatomy courses. This project is also important because minorities and women are under represented in the field of science. By introducing my students to a fascinating field of science, their interest in science will grow and perhaps one day they will become scientists themselves.

By participating in these realistic investigations, my students will develop a higher level of learning and more retention of information than by using books alone.

My students and I will be greatly appreciative if you are able to help them become osteologists.
