My Students
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. For many of them, their only exposure to technology is during school hours.
I want to provide my students with creative and meaningful hands-on learning experiences in our science classroom.
They love thinking outside the box and accepting new challenges. Their creativity is inspiring! I am so excited to offer them an insight into what a STEM career has to offer.
Middle School is the perfect time to introduce the engineering design process through simple STEM activities because it builds on a student's natural curiosity to create. I want to provide an invitation for my 6th graders to explore and engineer through play.
My Project
My sixth graders are eager for hands-on learning experiences. By providing them with building kits and STEM activities I hope to expose them to the creative process and provide an opportunity for meaningful collaboration with their classmates.
STEM activities provide students with a unique way to problem solve as well as increase their critical thinking skills.
ZOOB building sets challenge the students to create their own designs and toys to play with. ZOOB captures the dynamic movement based on the way things move in nature instead of using traditional stacking connections, so the pieces are interactive when connected. The LEGO kits will give the students challenges to build catapults and chain reactions.
My hope is to have enough STEM activities for the students to explore in pairs during Science class. With these materials, I will have enough stations for each pair of students to explore a different challenge. I hope to encourage the students to explore STEM fields, especially the girls!
