I teach sixth grade English as a Second Language (ESL) in a very poor area of Brooklyn, NY. My students come from all different countries around the world, such as Panama, Mexico, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, the Dominican Republic, and Bangladesh. I would like to do an author study with my students about Louis Sachar. Louis Sachar is an author who has written many awesome books for upper elementary and middle schoolers, which are perfect for my beginning-level English language learners. I would love to have a class set of the book "Sixth Grade Secrets" by Louis Sachar. It's about a sixth grade girl who forms a club in her classroom and the rival club that emerges to challenge her. Reading this book would be a great way to talk with my class about social issues, such as friendship and cliques, that are pertinent to sixth graders. This book would also provide me with a means to teach conflict resolution, which is very important for these students. The author study project I mentioned above would consist of reading at least three books by one author and completing reports and projects about each of the three books. This would be the second Louis Sachar book we have a full set of, and would put us one book closer to being able to complete the author study project. Please help us be able to complete a Louis Sachar author study project together. Thank you!
