Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work with Newcomer students in an ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) classroom. My students are in their first year of schooling in the United States. They come from all over the world and I have 6 different languages spoken in my classroom. Some of my students are refugees and some are unaccompanied minors who escaped traumatic situations in their home countries and crossed the border on their own without a family member with them. I also have numerous students who only attended school for a year or never attended school formally so they need to adjust to the school routine and expectations.
My students do not speak English or are at the emerging stage of English acquisition.
What they may not have in English, they have in their native languages and they bring a wealth of background knowledge and experience into the classroom, the key is to know how to tap into their knowledge to help them in the English speaking classroom.
My Project
My students have to walk around a large indoor-outdoor urban campus all day long. They do not use lockers and they are lugging heavy backpacks with them. It is exhausting mentally and physically to be navigating a large campus but imagine doing that when you do not speak the language and the school culture is foreign to you.
Classes full of students you don't know, teachers you don't understand, and curriculum that is incomprehensible.
There is a sanctuary for them and that is the ESOL classroom. There the teacher is able to communicate with you, the students are your friends because you all have the same thing in common, being in a brand new environment and culture, the curriculum is comprehensible, and to top it off, the classroom has wonderful seating to feel comfortable, relaxed, and makes you ready to learn. Of course, you do your best in this setting because you can let the tension roll off of you when you are sitting comfortably. Who wouldn't look forward to spending some time in this beautiful classroom?
