My students have to walk around a large indoor-outdoor urban campus all day long. They do not use lockers and they are lugging heavy backpacks with them. It is exhausting mentally and physically to be navigating a large campus but imagine doing that when you do not speak the language and the school culture is foreign to you. Classes full of students you don't know, teachers you don't understand, and curriculum that is incomprehensible. There is a sanctuary for them and that is the ESOL classroom. There the teacher is able to communicate with you, the students are your friends because you all have the same thing in common, being in a brand new environment and culture, the curriculum is comprehensible, and to top it off, the classroom has wonderful seating to feel comfortable, relaxed, and makes you ready to learn. Of course, you do your best in this setting because you can let the tension roll off of you when you are sitting comfortably. Who wouldn't look forward to spending some time in this beautiful classroom?
