My Students

This is my first year back to teaching after taking five years off after having a baby. I am so excited to be back in the classroom enriching the lives of children. My students this year are the sweetest bunch of kids. They are kind to each other and encourage each other to do their best work.

My students are very diverse in a few ways.

We have three different primary languages and being in second grade, some are still learning English. Home lives are diverse with various family members raising the children. Family incomes vary but tend to be on the low side.

The pandemic left a big academic gap and my class is working hard to fill in missing gaps and improve 1 - 1.5 academic years to be ready to enter third grade. Thank you for considering us for your donation!

My Project

Focus, choice, and sustained attention is something we all want for our students. I believe flexible seating is an important component in meeting these essential skills.

Flexible seating can enhance the learning experience while both sitting at a desk and sitting in other spaces around the room.

When a lesson requires students to be at desks, chairs can become uncomfortable and students may begin to fidget and lose focus. Using a wobble chair, wobble cushion, or balance ball allows for movement and stimulation while students continue learning within their personal space. These seats can also be moved around the room for work at tables or other nooks in the room. When students are in reading and math stations, I offer a seating choice around the room to work independently, with a partner, or in a small group. The wobble cushions and floor seats are ideal for more comfortable options on the floor.

When students are given choices, they are more likely to be committed to the choice and succeed. It is also an opportunity for students to learn self-awareness and how alternative seating can have an impact on how they might best learn. I often encourage my students to evaluate how the environment affects their learning and to choose the most appropriate space and accommodations for personal best. Flexible seating will provide many pathways to growth.
