My Students

My students are hard working young individuals with an eagerness to learn. They have great aspirations of going to college or trade school. For instance, some students want to go to Indiana State University, Ivy Tech, or University of Louisville.

They want to be teachers, construction workers, stylists, and mathematicians.

They start talking about their aspirations in middle school which allows me to better serve their current and future needs/abilities. My students overcome daily obstacles to arrive at school ready to learn. More often than not, many come to school hungry, tired, and without school supplies. Despite the obstacles, my students are kind and want to succeed in school and beyond.

I am a speech language pathologist who teaches the articulation, language and social skills that these kids need now and after they graduate. I am extremely proud of everything that my students achieve.

My Project

My students need a place to sit next to each other to better develop their social and language abilities. A consistent place to sit in a classroom gives a student ownership and purpose. It also allows for better collaboration and is more reflective of a college setting.

A table and chairs will encourage students to develop better turn-taking and sharing skills as well as improve their understanding of personal space.

The students have done their best with our assortment of desks and chairs, but I know they would feel so valued and loved if they had a space with dedicated furniture.

There will also be more space for life skills activities such as cooking. Functional activities are one of the best ways for students to learn language. Similarly, the iPad will allow students to practice other life-skills such as fill out virtual job applications, manage mock finances, find and read recipes, find definitions, etc.; the possibilities are endless.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
