Sink or Float: A Density Exploration

Help me give my students a chance to explore density! Water density tanks and UV/Pony beads for poly density bottles will help students observe how more dense matter sinks and less dense matter floats!

My Students

Plutarch once said, "The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be kindled." Our sixth grade students are challenge seekers who have ignited their passion for learning. My students are inquisitive about the world around them. I work in a Title I school where 48% fall in the low socio-economic range, 20% are English Learners, and 43% are considered Ethnic Minority. With diverse backgrounds and perspectives, each student has a voice and a unique perspective in our classroom community.

We don’t believe only some people have the “science gene.” We will utilize science and engineering practices to make learning accessible to each student.

Through our experiences, experiments, and discussions, we hope to develop resilience and to learn from both our failures and successes. We are seeking scientific tools to help us create hands-on lab opportunities.

My Project

My sixth graders are exploring how density is a measure of the amount of matter in a certain space. After observing intriguing phenomena, my students are excited about asking questions and conducting investigations. Through the help of water density tanks and poly density bottles, students will come to understand two main factors about density. One factor is the size of the particles. Another main factor is the amount of space between the particles.

How often do you see something floating in the middle of a liquid?

Water density tanks and poly density bottles will help students observe when you mix liquids, solids, and gases, they will usually sort themselves with more dense matter sinking to the bottom and less dense matter floating to the top.

My students will have so many questions about density when they see the UV beads and the colored beads separate in the poly density bottles. Then, the bead layers slowly come together in the center of the liquid! This experiment is great for illustrating concepts such as solubility, density, miscibility, the salting out effect, etc. Students will also
