This past summer, I began my STEM endorsement for educators where I was really inspired by how my professors modeled how to share their passion for science by providing us strategic hands-on experiments. I realized our sixth grade does not currently have basic scientific tools to help students engage in their investigations. Students read from articles and textbooks about scientific practices, but have little hands-on experience. With your help, all of that can change. Our students will finally have access to scientific tools to help us conduct investigations. By utilizing the science and engineering practices, students will be able to explore why and how things work in their lives. The tools will help students plan out their investigation, and collect data so they are better able to interpret data to tell a story of what they are seeing. The scientific tools will be used in a variety of ways. In our investigation about density, a scale and a graduated cylinder can help a student conduct an experiment about the relationship between mass and volume. While exploring different chemical or physical properties, students can test conductivity of salt in a beaker of water with the conductivity probe or examine salt through a microscope to see they are in the shape of cubes. Students will develop more questions and will have a variety of tools to help them test their claims, collect data, and recognize patterns in the world around us.
