Single Desks Are Restricting, Please Help Me Provide Flexible Seating!
Help me give my students flexible seating to promote collaboration and choice. Our lecture type classroom with stairs limits us from the ways we can arrange our desks.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are amazing and eager to learn! The students who attend our STEAM school are members of a very under-served community. The area has a high crime rate and homeless population. Over 60% of our population receive free or reduced lunch..
The school has 22% foster and homeless youth in our population.
I teach students from a low socio-economic area of Compton/Carson with a large amount receiving free or reduced lunch. Our school is ethnically diverse along with academically diverse. Over 30% of the students have high needs, IEPs, 504 Plans, and immigrant children with English being their second language. I’d love to promote inclusivity and bring hands-on learning to life in my classroom.
My Project
Hi! Thank you for taking the time to read my project. I am Ms. Hurtado and I teach 6th grade mathematics. I incorporate A LOT of collaborative group work and independent practice in my classroom. We currently have single desks which are very restrictive and old school! Technology and devices are crucial for our learning and development, tables and desks are a tool that should be user-centric. Some benefits of flexible seating include but are not limited to are that, ”Students feel empowered by having some degree of choice and control over their environment. Flexible seating allows students to choose where they work and with whom. It also allows them to change their location and positions as needed.” I incorporate innovative methods of teaching and technology in the classroom but my students are forced to use single desks in rows because of our “lecture type classroom” that is elevated with several steps In each row which is fit for a college classroom not middle school. We cannot form groups, u-shape, or any other seating arrangement that fosters collaboration because of the style of our classroom. We try to utilize the space we have to the best of our ability but I know that the children will benefit greatly from flexible seating.
