This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
At our high school, we are fortunate to have an incredibly diverse student body. Our chorus students are incredibly driven young people who are working to become leaders and valuable members of our community through music.
We are working together to create a culture that values music education, and all that music can teach us.
We take our natural skills and talents and put them to work in our chorus program. We learn from each other and we teach others to love music.
My Project
Our choral risers are approximately 40-50 years old. The metal frames are warped and do not fit together well. Bolts and wheels are missing on some of them as well. My students are extremely concerned with the fact that the risers feel unstable, unsafe and shaky. The safety risks inherent in performing on antiquated equipment have a major effect on the confidence of our performances.
My incredible and talented chorus students are extremely focused, but are unfortunately forced to worry about their personal safety while trying to focus on their performance.
The risers are visibly old and damaged as well. The carpeting is ripped and soiled. For the safety of our students we want to replace them as soon as possible.
