This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My school is a high poverty/low income, Title One school with children from a variety of ethnic and social backgrounds. Despite their differences, my students love music classes. They love to sing, dance, play games and play instruments. Music gives them a chance to explore music from around the world that they may not otherwise get to experience. I would love to be able to expand their love of music making and appreciation by bringing more instrument learning into my general music classroom.
My Project
Reading and singing stories in the music class will encourage children to want to read, sing and learn more. Song stories are great for sharing with children as they learn the story, they tend to want to sing along and they are also more likely to share the stories with their families.
By donating to our project, my students will be able to share in learning a wealth of song stories in a variety of genres and subject matter.
A variety of materials and stories will assist me in being able to reach all of the children in my school. My hope is that these stories and songs will have an effect on my students that they will want to share them at home but also retain some of the basic story or song into their adult lives.
