Being a first-year kindergarten teacher is challenging, especially when resources are scarce, making it difficult to deliver quality instruction. I requested some basic essentials for the classroom. For instance, every day we practice letter sounds and sight words on the clipboards that were generously donated. Students also practice writing their names and tracing letters with markers and erasers, which they now each have in their own toolkits. We use these tools during dictation to make learning more engaging. Each student received their own set of crayons, which thrilled them beyond measure.\r\n\r\nAs I got to know my students, I realized the value of Ticonderoga pencils with triangle grips, especially since many of them had not attended preschool and lacked prior writing experience. Their grips have improved significantly, thanks to your support. On the first day of school, I used large writing pads to brainstorm rules with the students, and they remain a vital resource for creating anchor charts for our readings and assessments. Students love using the primary writing journals to write about their \"Weekend News\" on Monday mornings. As their teacher, I love being able to see their progress in writing as the weeks go on! \r\n\r\nStudents were amazed by the \"giant sticky notes\" (chart paper)! We use them often as we begin new units, discuss new topics, and brainstorm ideas. It's a great way to make connections between different essential ideas and to refer to important concepts and vocabulary. We also use the chart paper to track different character names whenever we read a new text.\r\n\r\nAt the beginning of the year, I filled students' 3-ring binders (which we fondly call our \"BEE Binders\") with important resources such as the alphabet, hundreds charts, sight words, and short stories for reading fluency practice. Students use their BEE Binders every day to keep their homework organized and as a 2-way communication folder.
