Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students, many from a lower socioeconomic setting (we are a Title I School), each have a special education diagnosis with an IEP. I have a wide range of young learners (8 coming from a preschool program): a spectrum from non-verbal Autistic, Speech/Language impaired, Learning Disabled, to those who struggle behaviorally. The way that the classroom environment is set up and the specific supplies we look to possess will make such a big difference because of the students' individual academic and sensory needs. In order to be ready for learning, the students need to be calm, not overly stimulated, and have the appropriate materials necessary for each of their individual requirements.
My Project
This year I will have 8 new students coming from preschool. All of my (12) students have special needs (mostly are Autistic) with an IEP. They need a lot of structure and certain materials. I am moving to another classroom, so it will be nice to have some fresh, new supplies. The dot markers will help students do art projects or choose a correct answer. The mirrors will help them practice functional, self-care, personal hygiene, and daily living skills. The sensory supplies (rocking horses and boundary chair) will help soothe and calm them. The photo nameplates will help the students identify pictures of themselves, improve name recognition, and realize where their items are in the classroom. There are also some general classroom necessities that are being requested, which are staples in a special education classroom: such as velcro and laminating sheets. The lesson planner will enable to me to be better organized and probated while looking ahead to create activities which reach each student at his/her level. We will need more storage bins to keep the students' clothes, etc., as they are younger and are sure to need them. I look forward to incorporating these things into my classroom!
