Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I teach an alternative program for that serves home-schooled kids, in grades 1-6. Students come to school part time and come from a wide variety of cultural and familial upbringing.

In my classroom program, we create a community.

Some have been living "off the grid" and have never been in a school before. Some have parents who are medical workers at the local hospitals who work odd shifts that don't fit the scheduling of regular school. Some students join this class from a transitional time in their lives, either from special learning needs, a divorcing family, or a negative experience from bullying.

For the last two years we have been using the spiral notebooks for nature journaling. It has been a huge success. Students have been learning about the insect, bird, and plant species that live in our schoolyard. Indoors, we are studying the basics of science and the wide range of scientific domains that exist. The books on my list will be read over and over.

My classroom gives students a chance to breathe, build community, and fall in love with learning.
