Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students love to learn. In spite of many hardships faced in our community (crime, poverty, drugs, gangs, ICE, hunger, fear), our school is beacon of stability and promise. The photo shows some of my students at their 8th grade graduation party; you're looking at eight different nationalities and six different home languages (and the entire class includes even more). And please notice how they're making do, finding fun in a simple game with a plastic Solo cup. I think this photo captures their innovation and positive mindset.

The education that my students obtain is their ticket to a better future.

We hear regular praise from our district's high school that our former students are among the most well-prepared, and many of our students advance to prestigious colleges. It is a long pathway from one of Portland's toughest neighborhoods to Yale, Stanford, and Notre Dame (I'm not kidding!), but our students have made it happen.

My Project

My students are working from home because of COVID-19. Many of them must work in environments with significant background noise: siblings doing their own online school, parents and other relatives stuck at home, televisions blaring. This is a high-poverty area, and some students live in displaced home settings, with multiple families in a single dwelling. This makes for significant audio distortion when the student participates in class. Moreover, the students are using iPads, which they cradle in their lap, making rustling and clicking noises that only add to the distorted audio. Some of the iPads even have broken microphones that only pick up a muffled mumble. As their teacher, I personally have significant hearing loss, and I can barely comprehend what some of my students are saying.

My students need access to earpieces and microphones that are good enough to let them develop their speaking and listening skills to the fullest.

The Apple Ear Pods are simple, sturdy devices with good audio reproduction and a microphone close to the mouth for the elimination of background noise. They are a good fit for the challenging conditions under which my students learn. We know that 21st Century skills in Language Arts lean heavily on the skills of speaking, listening, and collaborating, and we must remove barriers to students acquiring those skills. Providing a high-quality affordable headphone/microphone is a simple step in that direction.
