My Students

Hola! I teach Kindergarten and first grade English Language Learners at a PreK-5 Title I school in Laurel, MD. The majority of students at the school speak Spanish as their first language, however many other languages are spoken from Krio to Twi, Urdu, French, and many more. Students often enter school without having attended pre-kindergarten.

My students are amazing, resilient, multi-tasking superheroes, who while already proficient in one or more languages, are adding English to their repertoire.

They bring their culture, perspective, and background knowledge to the classroom and teach me as much as I teach them. These students are our future leaders: multilingual, multicultural, and broad-minded.

My Project

English Language Learners, though incredibly intelligent, don't always have the vocabulary in English to participate in discussions. One thing that everyone can relate to and speak about is themselves and their families. To help with this and build community, I often have students draw their families or themselves participating in their favorite activities. Unfortunately, I have seen my students struggle with finding a crayon to match their skin tone. They wonder if they should choose the apricot, or the brown or black, but nothing really fits what they see in the mirror. That is why I am requesting Crayola Colors of the World crayons and a crayon sharpener for each of my students so they can feel validated in sharing their stories.
