This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

At least 70% of the students at our Title I school are living below the poverty line. Many of our students come from single-parent homes, and they wind up having to feed themselves because their parents or guardians are usually working. Unfortunately, this also means that there is nobody around to teach them even the most basic of cooking skills, and they wind up making poor nutritional choices and eating what amounts to be junk food for one or more “meals.”

This was especially apparent during the pandemic when students would not be able to leave their homes, and nobody was there to prepare meals for them or teach them how to make good decisions at mealtime.

We want our students to learn to cook and make good, healthy decisions.

My Project

Our school has started a Culinary Arts Level 1 and Level 2 class. The purpose of this class is to teach our students basic cooking skills that they will need for life. We are a Title I school which means that at least 70% of the student population is on a free or reduced-price lunch program due to financial limitations in their households.

We would like to have a chance to teach students to cook economic, healthy dishes for themselves and to be able to help their families with meals and maybe even turn these skills into a career someday.

We currently have 2 large classes (20+ each) and an extremely limited amount of cookware, utensils, and consumable resources like fresh and canned foods. We don’t even have an established budget for such an endeavor, and I have been bringing my own cookware, utensils, and ingredients from home and paying out-of-pocket. I could use a little help to make my students' lives better.
