Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a low-income school in the Belmont neighborhood of Bronx, NY. The majority of my students are academically and emotionally challenged and suffer from trauma and poverty. As a result, they exhibit depression, anxiety, and exhibit aggressive behaviors on a daily basis. Their parents and caregivers are also struggling and aren't always able to provide their children with the tools they need to even have a chance of success. A large number of our students are living in temporary housing and are traveling over an hour each way just to get to school.
As a school counselor, students come to my room when they are upset, agitated, angry, depressed and/or scared.
My room is also used as a space where I meet with families, students and agency workers. I would love to create a space in the school where they know they are coming to a comfortable, inviting, clean atmosphere, where parents know when they leave, their child is safe.
My Project
I am requesting some healthy snacks as well as new motivational posters for the counseling office. Last week, our school experienced an unimaginable tragedy. One of our 5th graders took her life. our community is grieving.
I am requesting some yummy snacks to comfort the grieving students and families, as well as some new cheerful posters to decorate the hallways.
There is so much yet so little to be done to help alleviate the sadness of this community, but with your help, this project can help. I am hoping the new posters will change up the walls, and motivate the students to do their best.
