My Students
Imagine a classroom where students discuss reading strategies insightfully, self-select appropriate literacy activities strategically, and support one another to develop-grade level reading behaviors. Within the first five months of school, my class of second-grade students has built a community of literacy engagement through book recommendations, joyfully buddy reading with first graders and kindergarteners, and continuing to recommend reading CAFE strategies to one another to collaboratively decode words.
The typical student in my classroom is more skilled at retelling story elements in Spanish than in English.
100% of our students are African American or Latino, and 12 of 18 of my students are learning English. Our classrooms are dilapidated and access to classroom furniture and organizational tools is nearly nonexistent. Nevertheless, my students and savvy, supportive of one another, and genuinely excited to read. They set goals and continuously work to achieve them.
My Project
In order to support the reading skill of my class of largely English language learners, students need a variety of tools that will help them recognize simple words ("sight words") easily as they are reading. Using a variety of sight word magnets and letter stamps, students will read, write, and reproduce the most common words in the English language to gain reading fluency. By using interactive, hands-on tools to internalize these words, students will be able to invest more time in paying attention to the content of what they are reading, instead of just trying to decode (or break apart) the words. These tools will also support buddy reading with our first-grade buddies, and peer editing during writing.
