My students need 20 more books of Sideways Stories from Wayside School by Louis Sachar. Our classroom has about 20 copies of this book but most are not in the best condition.
Our classroom is never short of personality, energy, and all are eager to learn. My students are from low-income neighborhoods where they often have to stay inside for safety. Our school community makes an effort for our students to experience what they wouldn't normally on their own. We provide a safe environment to learn and consistently provide opportunities for growth.
I would love for my students to be able to dig deeper into literature.
Most of the time you will not see a student without a book in there hands. They love to read. Our school library allows them access to books but for most of them that is the extent. My students also love to share what they are reading with each other. Our classroom community is positive and I want to use as many materials to help fuel it even more.
My students have big hearts and creative minds. They do not have many opportunities or access to resources outside of school that can feed their interest in literature. Getting to and from public libraries is not always an option. I want to allow them the opportunity to read while building our classroom community.
My Project
We will be reading Sideways Stories from Wayside School together as a classroom and then dig deeper with specific reading skills in small reading groups. During reading groups, my students are encouraged to help one another read and sharpen their skills. It is best each student has a copy. Our classroom already has about 20 books of this title, however, most of those books are damaged and we need at least 28.
My students love to read, especially books that make them laugh.
As a community, we love to laugh! The positive classroom community allows us to share our thoughts, dig deep into a book, to laugh together, and grow together. Sideways Stories is a good book to bond over, no matter the reading level.
